When you are new to photography, it can difficult to try to combine all the different techniques, parameters, and creative ideas you need to know all at once to create a successful photo. To help you on your way, this great video will show you five different techniques you should know to create better images.
Coming to you from Mango Street, this excellent video discusses five different techniques beginner photographers should know to create successful images. Of the techniques, one that I think is particularly important to work on is the usage of negative space. We often think of composition from an additive perspective: we build an image by placing more and more elements in it to balance each other out until we feel satisfied. However, this can often lead to overly and unnecessarily complicated photos. Negative space can be a fantastic way to balance the frame in a simpler, cleaner manner that emphasizes your subject while removing distracting elements that would otherwise compete for your viewer’s attention. I often try to approach composition from a subtractive (instead of additive) perspective for this exact reason to create cleaner and simpler shots.
